2002-03 Mid-Season Report

LOOKING AHEAD...
With a more potent offense in 2003 along with greater leadership, the Blue Devils have great aspirations for the coming year. The improvement will come via juniors Jeff Lake and Brian Markowitz, who will have returned from their fall semesters in Europe. The teammates will make their 2002-03 season debuts when Duke travels to Maryland on January 10.

Last season, Lake was named to the 2001-02 All-ACCHL First Team at forward. The skilled forward scored 26 goals and had 26 assists in 21 games. Markowitz earned 2001-02 All-ACCHL Honorable Mention. He was third on the team in scoring with 22 goals and 11 assists in 19 games.

With these two, Duke will be a deeper team at both ends of the ice. Also, Lake will get a chance to play with his talented younger brother Steve for the first time in their Duke careers. The Devils can't wait for this family reunion coupled with the presence of Markowitz.

LOOKING BACK...
The first half of the season leaves Duke at 6-5, and 3-3 in the ACCHL. The team was plagued with injuries throughout 2002, but certainly was pleased with the play of its freshmen. Drew Evans, Steve Lake, and Joe Freimuth all add skill and versatility to the Blue Devil lineup. The rest of the class, Justin Bieber, Marc Roitman, Eric Shepsman, has certainly contributed as well.

In addition to the freshmen, another new presence the Devils are happy about is that of assistant coach Bill Williams. Coach Williams joined the Devils in November and has already provided the team with great leadership and support. The Hershey, PA native lives in the North Carolina area, where he currently referees and coaches youth hockey.

In terms of scoring, Robert Fogarty and Steve Lake have provided Duke with most of its offense thus far. Fogarty has continued his brilliant Duke career by capitalizing on most of his scoring chances and utilizing his tremendous hockey sense. Meanwhile, "Lake, Jr." has been remarkable in just the first half of his first year. The freshman leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and 15 assists, good for 2.27 points per game. Fogarty currently has 20 points, and he is scoring at an impressive rate of 2.22 points per game.

In net, Duke has received solid play from goalies Mark Lavender and Marc Roitman. Duke's play on the defensive end of the ice has been its weakness so the two netminders have faced numerous odd-man situations. With the added depth in 2003, Duke hopes to tighten its play in its own end such that the opposition has significantly fewer scoring opportunities.

On the blue line, Duke has been led by Drew Evans, Calvin Hui, Ben Peterson, Jon Stone, and Luke Wolin. Wolin, the Blue Devils' captain, has provided his usual steady play and leadership for Duke. The gritty defenseman is looking forward to the final half of his final
season in a Duke uniform. He says, "I feel like Lake and Markowitz will deliver both a sizable offensive output and the intangibles such as leadership on and off the ice. Their presence alone will induce a significantly better Duke Hockey team in the second half of the year."
