Duke tops Virginia Tech 4-1
HILLSBOROUGH, NC -- The Duke Blue Devils came out strong vs.
the Virginia Tech Hokies in their second league game of the
season. Only eight minutes into the game Brandon Jenkins used
some of his razzle dazzle to walk by a baffled Virginia Tech
defenseman and put the Devils on the board first, with a high
wrister that sailed in over the goalie’s glove.
Duke went into the second period with a 1-0 lead, trying to
build on Clayton Jernigan’s stellar play as well as the
strong defense in front of him. Less than two minutes into the
stanza Ryan Eick took the puck down the side boards and fed
it back to Dan Larrea up at the point. Larrea let a laser a
go from above the left circle that sped past the goalie’s
left leg pad. The Devils continued to pressure Virginia Tech
and their goalie the remainder of the period, but several scoring
nice chances were turned aside. Virginia Tech did manage to
get on the board with a little under five minutes left in the
middle frame. With a screen in front of Jernigan a Hokie defenseman
was able to sneak one into the back of the net.
Going into the third with a 2-1 lead, Selman’s squad was
determined to put some more pucks in for insurance. With a little
over five minutes gone, Ben Tyson picked up a loose puck in
the neutral zone and skated in on a two-on-one with Bert Maidment.
The Hokie defenseman committed to Tyson who slid a pass through
his legs down into the slot. Maidment quickly skated in from
the left side as the puck cruised towards him, and pulled a
fancy spin move as he quickly deflected the puck between the
goaltender’s pads. Only several minutes later Larrea was
at it again, this time showing his tremendous patience with
the puck. Brandon Jenkins entered the offensive zone from the
left side, hit the brakes, and fed a pass to Kevin Ford gliding
in over the blue line. Ford fed it down to Larrea on the right
side who, after noticing their goalie was out of position, pulled
the puck wide towards the goal line and slid it into the open
side of the net. That iced the Blue Devils’ victory at
4-1 as they rolled four solid lines the rest of the game, which
all played great defense while still creating offensive opportunities.
The Blue Devils are now 2-0 in ACCHL play. |
