Georgia Tech slips past Duke 2-1
ATLANTA, GA -- On the second night of back-to-back games the
Duke Blue Devils were determined to head home with at least
one win. The Blue Devils came out stronger than the previous
night, but did not have as strong of a period as they had hoped
for. They had to spend nearly half the period killing off penalties,
as they took four.
After a scoreless first it was Georgia Tech who opened the
scoring in the middle period. Less than two minutes into the
stanza Georgia Tech center, Mike Zaucha, lifted a wrist shot
over Andrew Barbour’s glove to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Duke played strong defense the rest of the period and got
several decent chances on net, all of which the Yellow Jackets’
netminder turned aside.
With a little over four minutes gone in the third frame the
Blue Devils tied up the score at one apiece. Bert Maidment
gave Brandon Jenkins a perfect feed down the right side boards
as Jenkins then finished the play with a shot that beat the
goaltender high on the short side. Duke continued to play
in a disciplined manner, but once again did not have much
puck luck as many of their shots were blocked and easily turned
away. With nine minutes left in the game the Jackets showed
they weren’t going to simply settle for a tie as they
slipped passed the Duke defense and managed to get one by
Marc Roitman. Duke had several close offensive chances through
the closing minutes but could not find the equalizer.
