Duke places second in 2005 Canes Cup
RALEIGH, NC -- The Duke University Blue Devils returned to action
for the spring semester Friday night vs. UNC at the RecZone
in Raleigh. Duke cruised to an 8-0 victory as Clayton Jernigan
got the shutout while nearly all the skaters chipped in on the
points list. On Saturday night Duke played one of its most exciting
games of the year. The Blue Devils showed their perseverance
as they overcame both a 3-0 and 4-1 deficit to win. After being
down by three goals Duke rallied its troops and eventually tied
the score at four. Georgetown scored halfway through the third
period, making it 5-4, and played solid defense nearly the rest
of the period. With a little under a minute left in the game
Jernigan came to the bench for the extra skater. With 14 seconds
remaining, Captain Steve Lake put the puck into the net tying
the score at five. And so the game went to a continuous overtime
battle. With four minutes left in the first overtime freshman
Dan Larrea raced in on a two on one with Ryan Tolkin, and slammed
home a rebound to win the game 6-5. On Sunday morning a tired
Duke team played NC State in the finals for the second straight
year. The Wolfpack played with a close lead nearly the entire
game and managed to take first place in the tournament with
a 5-3 victory. |
