Duke Mangles Moutaineers 6-3
Hillsborough,
NC -- After a disappointing series against Virginia last weekend,
the Devils returned to the ice seeking redemption. They came
out flying on Friday night at the SportsPlex,
out-shooting West Virginia 62-22 in a 6-3 victory.
Robert Fogarty
opened the scoring on one of his trademark wrap-arounds. The
Mountaineers responded with a goal off a deflection before
Drew Evans notched his
first career goal as a Blue Devil to put Duke ahead 2-1. Evans
took a drop pass from linemate Dave
Bradley and headed to the far post where he jammed
the puck home past a surprised Ben Mitchell, West Virginia's
goalie.
The teams headed to the dressing room after one period with
Duke ahead 2-1. West Virginia tied the score 2-2 on a power
play goal about five minutes into the second period. Duke
then scored two goals in a row, including Evans' second of
the game on a beautiful deflection in front of the net. The
Blue Devils skated to the dressing room after two periods
ahead 4-2.
West Virginia tried to keep it close by drawing within one
goal about ten minutes into the final frame. However, Duke
was too much on this night. Goals by Steve
Lake and another by Fogarty put the Mountaineers away.
The teams resume the two-game weekend series tomorrow at 6:00
PM at the SportsPlex with Duke hoping for a sweep of the two-game
series.
