Duke Beats Virginia Tech 4-3 in Weekend Rematch
ROANOKE,
VA -- After losing the first game of the weekend series against
Virginia Tech on Friday, the Blue Devils rebounded on Saturday
with a 4-3 win. The win included another solid performance by
Duke goalie Marc
Roitman and a penalty shot goal by Steve
Lake.
The Hokies jumped out first with two goals in the first period.
Duke responded with a goal by Robert
Fogarty to make the score 2-1. Fogarty took a nice
pass from Lake and jammed the puck in the right side of the
goal. The Devils took the 2-1 deficit into the second period.
Duke tied the score in the second on Lake's penalty shot
goal. A Virginia Tech player covered the puck in his own crease,
giving Duke's leading scorer the penalty shot. On the penalty
shot, Lake faked left before roofing the puck in the upper
right corner of the goal. Hokie goalie Robert Stephens had
no chance.
Duke scored their third unanswered goal when Jesse
Swanko converted a rebound in front of the net. A
late second period goal by the Hokies left the teams tied
at three after two periods.
Swanko recorded the game winning goal and his second of the
game about eight minutes into the third. The Duke winger took
a pass from Lake and fired a nice wrist shot off the post
and into the net.
The Devils held the Hokies off the rest of the way thanks
to great defense by Drew Evans,
Luke Wolin,
and Ben Peterson.
Duke hopes to take the momentum from their 4-3 win into next
weekend's game against rival North Carolina.
