Maryland Beats Duke 8-3
LAUREL,
MD-- Duke opened 2003 with an 8-3 loss to non-league foe Maryland.
The Devils gave up two early power play goals and never recovered.
Maryland added two more first period goals, including one with
just 1.4 seconds on the clock, to take a 4-0 lead into the locker
room.
The Blue Devils responded with two goals in the second period
to make the score 4-2. Jesse
Swanko scored the first goal on a backhand shot into
the lower left corner of the net. Swanko's goal came seven
minutes into the second period. Robert
Fogarty scored the second goal, capitalizing on a
Duke power play two minutes later. Fogarty jammed home the
rebound of a shot by Steve
Lake.
Maryland then scored two goals in just over five minutes
to take a 6-2 lead. Steve Lake scored Duke's third goal with
about three minutes left in the second. Lake took the puck
off the faceoff and slipped it home. The second period ended
with Maryland leading 6-3.
Unfortunately, the Devils couldn't find the net in the third
period. Maryland added two goals in the second half of the
final frame to win 8-3. The Blue Devils hope to rebound at
home in their league game against N.C. State today at the
Triangle SportsPlex.
The puck drops at 6:00 PM.
