LEXINGTON,
KY -- Duke traveled to Kentucky on Saturday and lost to
the Wildcats 5-4 in overtime. Jeff Lake carried the Devils
but Duke couldn't put Kentucky away late in the game.
Kentucky jumped out a 3-0 after one period. Although Duke
outshot Kentucky 14-12 in the opening period, Duke wasn't
able to capitalize on its scoring chances while the Wildcats
made the most out of their opportunities.
Duke got on the board in the second period on a Jeff Lake
goal. The second ended with Duke trailing 3-1.
The third period got off a bad start for Duke as Kentucky
regained its three goal lead just 35 seconds into the period.
However, Duke responded with three unanswered goals to tie
the score at four. Jeff Lake scored with 15:24 left and
again with 14:02 left. Then, with 4:38 remaining, Luke Wolin
tied the game. All three goals came on the power play.
With 4:11 left, Duke got another power play and the chance
to take the lead. In a strange turn of events, the lights
went out in the arena and the game was stopped seven seconds
into the power play.
After waiting 15 minutes, the lights came back on and play
resumed. Duke failed to score on the power play and the
game headed into overtime.
Kentucky won the game 49 seconds into overtime on a slap
shot from the point. Despite having more scoring chances
and outshooting the Wildcats 48-40, Duke left the arena
with a loss.
