N.C. State Beats Duke 8-7 to Win 2003 Canes Cup
 RALEIGH,
NC -- N.C. State won the 2003 Canes Cup on Sunday night in an
exciting 8-7 win over Duke. In a game marred by atrocious officiating
on both sides, the Wolfpack and the Blue Devils did everything
they could to provide an entertaining game nonetheless.
Duke carried a 2-1 lead into the first intermission thanks
to goals by Robert
Fogarty and Luke
Wolin. Wolin's goal came on the power play. In the
first period, Duke goalie Mark
Lavender made several tremendous saves to preserve
the Duke lead.
However, for the second time in as many nights, Duke played
a terrible second period. The Wolfpack scored five unanswered
goals to take a 6-2 lead. Two of the goals came on the power
play in a game that featured 31 penalties called despite the
fact that play was fairly clean on both sides. Duke closed
the second period with a late power play goal by Steve
Lake to close the period with a 6-3 deficit.
Duke came out flying in the final period by scoring three
goals in the opening four minutes. All three goals, scored
by Wolin, Fogarty and Steve Lake, came on the power play.
Unfortunately, the Blue Devils couldn't take the lead, as
N.C. State scored the next two goals to take an 8-6 lead.
Jeff Lake
responded with a goal for Duke with 3:40 left but the Devils
couldn't score again. The Blue Devils will hope for a better
result next weekend when they face Virginia Tech in an ACCHL
game at the SportsPlex.
GAME NOTES
Duke finished second in the 2003 Canes Cup, with a 2-1 record.
N.C. State is the 2003 champion (3-0 in the tournament), Virginia
(1-2) finished third and North Carolina finished fourth (0-3).
