Duke Loses to Georgia Tech Again, 3-1
ATLANTA,
GA -- On Saturday night, before a crowd of over 2000 people,
Duke dropped their second of two games against Georgia Tech
by a score of 3-1. The game took place after the Atlanta Thrashers
took on the New York Islanders and featured a raucous pro-Georgia
Tech crowd. The teams also faced off in a three-on-three shootout
during the second intermission of the Thrashers' game. Duke
won the shootout 2-1 with goals by Luke
Wolin and Steve
Lake.
After losing on Friday night by a score of 5-1, Duke came
out more aggressively seeking redemption on Saturday evening.
The occupied Philips Arena skyboxes, the packed Philips Arena
restaurant, and the sizable Georgia Tech crowd provided Duke
with extra motivation as well.
Duke got on the board first in the first period on a goal
by Steve
Strickland. Steve Lake started the play with a nice
pass across the slot to Strickland. Georgia Tech goalie Roland
Sperlich stopped the initial shot and Strickland jammed home
his own rebound for the score. Duke maintained the 1-0 lead
through the first period.
The second period featured numerous scoring chances for both
the Devils and Yellow Jackets but the netminders on both teams
came up with several nice saves. Duke's Mark
Lavender held the fort and Duke carried the 1-0 lead
into the third.
Georgia Tech got on the board with a power play goal midway
through the final period on a wrist shot into the upper left
corner of the net. The Yellow Jackets then seized the momentum
and took the lead for good a few minutes later. They added
an empty net goal after several Duke scoring chances were
shut down by Sperlich.
With the Georgia Tech marching band playing in the background,
Duke left the Philips Arena ice disappointed in the 3-1 loss.
While the team was missing talented players Drew Evans and
Robert Fogarty, the team still felt it could have won both
weekend games.

The shootout during the second intermission
of the Thrashers' game consisted of three penalty shots for
each team. Duke's Mark Lavender stopped Georgia Tech's first
two shooters while Duke's Luke Wolin and Steve Lake both went
five-hole to win the shootout for Duke. Duke's Calvin
Hui failed to convert on the third penalty shot after
Duke had already won.
