Duke tops Virginia 7-4
Sophomore Brian Lake's third period romp was too much for the Virginia
Cavaliers on Friday, as the Blue Devils tallied their first win of the season 7-4. The game, a re-match of last year's ACCHL finals, was an early chance for two top contenders to wrangle for coveted league points. As Lake put it, "We open the season with some real challenges, and it's great to rise to the occasion." Tallying two goals and an assist with the game tied at four, the sophomore did exactly that.
The Blue Devils opened the game with a similarly impressive display
from senior Ben Tyson. The center netted Duke's first powerplay goal of the season after penalties to UVA's Kevin Miller and Risto Keravouri gave his team a two-man-advantage (12:54 – from Maidment). Just one minute and 54 seconds later, Tyson netted his second. With 2:34 remaining in the period, sophomore Jared Smith collected a shot from freshman Mark Perez and added a third - sending Duke to the locker room up 3.
To the dismay of head coach Brent Selman, Duke's performance in the first stanza did not carry over to the second period. "In the second we were outscored, out-shot, and out-played," said Smith.
Stellar goaltending from freshman Steve Galanis held the Cavs to two powerplay goals in the second period. With Mike Lehrhoff serving a minor for roughing, a Doug Franken shot deflected in off UVA forward Jamie Buonato in front, breaking Galanis' shutout. The second, from Franken, came with 45 seconds left as captain Issey Kato served two for holding.
"The refs called a tight game, but they called it both ways," said Kato of the officiating. New USA Hockey rules, following those recently instated in the NHL, blow the whistle on stick-work and interference that was once an accepted part of the game.
Rejuvinated, or just awakened, Duke re-took the ice with a new jump in the third. It was little more than a minute in when Duke junior Dan Phan fired in a goal from a sharp angle on the right side to reclaim a two-goal lead (18:42 - from Hurst). "We needed to start putting pucks on net," explained Phan.
Four minutes later, UVA's Buonato narrowed the margin when the linesman got in the way of a clearing pass, holding it in at the blue line. The deft passing of the Cav's Alex Bronson and Keravouri was too much for Duke defenders, who could not stop the 4 on 2 down low.
Play continued and UVA goaltender Sean Rada stymied several Blue Devil opportunities. Then, with 10:22 left to play, there was a pile-up in front of Duke's net. The puck kicked out to the point and, with Galanis immobilized and screened, Ricky Shoepke blasted a slapshot just under the crossbar, tying the game at 4 (from Buonata, Miller).
That's when Lake exploded. His goals came on either side of an assist to Lehrhoff, who paddled in Lake's pass from the slot. The first goal, a slap shot through traffic, wowed fans. The last, a dance of agility,
put the game out of reach as Duke went on to 7-4 victory.
