Maryland blanks Duke 8-0
The Blue Devils took on the Maryland Terrapins (Division 1) in Laurel, Maryland on Friday. This marked the first meeting between the two teams in three years, and in their last meeting, Maryland beat Duke 5-2. Throughout the first period, the shorthanded Devils played the Terrapins evenly. At the end of the first period, the score was tied, 0-0, as the Duke team out-shot Maryland 10 to 9, and Duke’s goaltender, Andrew Barbour, had a stellar period in net.
To start the second period, the Terrapins came alive, as they scored four goals on their first four shots of the period. The first goal came five seconds into the period as T.C. Costello beat Barbour short side on a wrist shot off a face-off win by Augie Gardner. Just 30 seconds later, Gardner netted the Terrapins’ second goal from Costello and Mike Wertheimer, on a wrist shot from the top of the circle. The third goal came off a well-placed shot by Mark Henninger, beating Barbour high on a delayed penalty. The next goal came from Henninger again at 1:47, as he tipped the puck past Barbour on the power play. This marked the end of Barbour’s night as he was pulled in favor of the freshmen, Elderidge Nichols. This was the first appearance of his career. The Terrapins finished off the period strong by scoring two more goals, one on the power play by Joe Cullinan from Gardner and Tom D’Addio, and one at even strength by Nick Torre from Costello.
By the third, the heavily depleted Blue Devils were at a disadvantage that was insurmountable. The Terrapins netted two more goals in the third period, one on the power play from D’Addio from Gardner and Sean Gerging. This marks only the second time that Duke has been shutout in at least four years.
The final score was Duke 0 Maryland 8. The Blue Devils look to get back to .500 this weekend against Lafayette, a fellow ACHA D2 opponent with regional ranking implications on the line.
Notes: There were 31 penalties in the contest, 17 of which were committed by Duke… the Blue Devils went 0-12 on the power play, while the Terrapins went 3-14… the Blue Devils traveled with 17 total players (three goalies) leaving 11 team members home with commitments related to Parents’ Weekend
