Duke beats Lafayette in OT 6-5

The Blue Devils traveled north from Laurel, MD to play the Lafayette Leopards in Bethlehem, PA. Duke looked to avenge their loss to Maryland, and they came out with a winning attitude. They tallied their first goal just 2:11 into the first period, as Brian Lake took the puck coast to coast and ripped a slap shot past Lafayette goalie, Sam Singer. However, the Leopards struck back as they scored the next two goals of the game. The first goal was scored by Ian Driscoll off a back door pass from John Siemann on a five-on-three power play. Their second goal was scored with just 57 seconds left in the period as Jesse Hatgis scored on a 2 on 1 from Dan Martini.

Lafayette struck again early, as Hunter Sparks scored off a puck that found its way into the slot off a bad bounce deep in the Duke defensive zone. The Blue Devils struck back quickly though on a goal from defensemen Kevin Hatala on the power play, which was set up by some great passing at the point by Lake and Issey Kato. Hatala lit the lamp again as he scored on a very acrobatic play as he put in a rebound from Bert Maidment on his back. Duke was able to take the lead with just 1:26 left when Dan Phan found an open Kato at the point, and he ripped a slap shot past Singer through a screen.

The Blue Devils found themselves shorthanded for most of the third period, and the Leopards were able to capitalize on the momentum that resulted from the man advantage. Hatgis scored off Elderidge Nichols’s blocker as Lafayette was able to keep the puck in the zone for a sustained period of time. Nichols stood strong for the remainder of the period saving 12 shots. At the end of regulation, the score remained tied, and the two teams went into overtime. There was little action in the extra frame until Kato took a shot from the point and the resulting rebound landed on several Blue Devil sticks until Marc Perez was able to put the biscuit in the basket.

The Blue Devils were able to return to even up their record on the season. Duke looks improve on their league standing next week against rival UNC in Hillsborough on Friday night.

Notes: Duke out shot Lafayette 38-31, marking Nichols’s first win as a Blue Devil… Perez’s game-winning goal also marked his first career goal.
